Frequently Asked Questions

Can’t I just scale our general population WODs down for a senior class?

I started coaching seniors by scaling down the daily WODs, which worked fine for a time. I did see some growth, but I also saw frustration and a greater tendency for over-use and injury.  Longevity of the members was low - only a month or two. By programing especially for seniors, I see constant growth in areas that are important to their everyday lives, less frustration because the progressions make sense for them and loads more enjoyment. Client retention is now over 80%.

What about ‘benchmark‘ CF wods?

YES! Not only does S4L have benchmark workouts, but we also use some of the traditional CF ‘Girls’ and ’Hero’ WODs for them. Naturally, we rework them to suit the needs of the senior population. This allows the S4L clients to feel connected with the other membes of the gym and helps build a stronger community.

Do we need special equipment for a S4L class?

A fully stocked CF box will have the requisite equipment. But keep in mind that S4L members will need lighter dumbbells, wallballs and kettlebells. If an equipment issues arises, we can provide suggestions for alternative equipment or movements.

What if I have a very fit senior client?

The S4L Method enables the coach to make small modifications to suit all fitness levels. Naturally, if you have an athlete who’s aspirations are to compete at the CF games, then they would need specialized competition programming.

Are there special considerations that a facility must have for a S4L class?

If you are looking to recruit an older population, I recommend you look closely at parking including: availability of disabled parking spaces, lots of open floor space and appropriately designed bathrooms. For safety concerns, the gym needs to be clear of clutter and provide ease of movement. Seniors judge more harshly than most when it comes to bathrooms and cleanlines. If your gym is in a hotter climate your gym facility will need air conditioning for the warmer months, since training in extreme heat isn’t safe for most seniors.

Can someone younger than 60 benifit from the S4L Method?

I have used the S4L method for the morbidly obese, athletes recovering from injury and new moms. Since the S4L method was developed for clients with many physical restrictions, it is easily applicable to a range of clientele. It’s also a great program for new moms because the classes are usually quieter than the gen-pop classes and the people are extremely welcoming, so it’s easy for them to get back on their feet. (The only problem will be getting new moms to voluntairily leave the class after a month or two.)
